Nibbling on sugary coated nuts made by my Italian mother-in-law, I sat down, opened my laptop and said to myself: now I'm going to write a smashing newsletter about how to start a journey to financial freedom.
The panicked voice in my head immediately popped up:
“But how do you write a smashing newsletter???”
Breathe in, breathe out.
'Just be you, Marie, and everything will be fine.'
Okay, let's do this - for real now.
Last week, I launched the Bored Millennial. 46 people have joined so far. Whoop whoop! That's a big class to speak to!
First, a little heads-up: you'll receive this newsletter twice a week. On Fridays, you'll get weekly updates on my progress in chasing financial freedom. On Tuesdays, I'll send an email on 1 topic, more in the personal growth space.
So for this Friday, the 1st of March edition, this is what you'll get:
• Learnings of Week 1: what went well? What sucked?
• Earnings of Week 1: the real numbers: how many followers I gained and how much money I made. Thought that would be interesting as well.
• Things I loved: tips on books and podcasts I recently loved.
I will also sneakily include some simple questions because I'd love your feedback to understand better who you are.
If you are still reading, amazing!
Now, let's dive in.
Learnings Week 1
It's easy to decide, 'Now I'm gonna start making money online - I give myself one year to make the dream come true' - but it is not easy to actually start.
I've been staring a lot at my screen. Restless hours in the night. 'I don't have a business idea', 'What is something people need but don't have right now?' 'Which problem can I solve?', 'I don't want to be the umpteenth content creator selling the same idea, but how can I be different?'
To be honest, I don't have the answer to these questions, like at all.
The online-making-millions-gurus say “You just need to create an offer.” Phoef, as simple as that? HOW??? I wonder.
I want to let you in on the vague ideas I currently have.
Writing on Medium - but then I'm dependent on platform decisions.
Subscription on the newsletter - but I need a bit more subscribers for that.
Launch an eCourse - but on what? Definitely NOT on how to make money online - 14.928.923.498,34 people are doing that already. Personal growth? Something for people who are bored at work?
Ghostwriting (email courses and LI posts) - I am trying out my 1st ghostwriting project (for free) and love it.
Writing a book - but sooo much work ('If you want to make it, you need to be willing to put into the work', speaks the little voice in my mind)
Coaching - I've been asked on LI to do this.
Public Speaking - I LOVE doing podcast interviews, panel discussions, or public speaking, and it would be awesome if I could get some gigs.
Now, I’d like to ask some questions and need an honest answer. (You won’t hurt my feelings, promise!)
Now, which actual actions have I taken this week?
• I wrote and published daily on LinkedIn, Medium, X and Substack.
• I engaged - answering comments, writing comments, reading articles on Medium,… (but to be honest, I struggle with this part);
• I've subscribed to many newsletters and got many free lead magnets and e-mail courses that promise amazing results. So, I'll put each of those to the test and report back on them.
• I did a podcast recording with Alexis from Manager IQ - I loved it.
• As mentioned, I started working on my first Ghostwriting project.
One thing I do every evening before going to sleep is visualising my goal. I visualise in detail where I want to be in one year.
During the day, I feel many doubts and insecurity, but I always try to steer my thoughts back to believing in myself and my potential.
And that’s the thing I struggle most with - the doubts and insecurities.
I want to ask 2 more questions.
Sorry about making you do all that work while reading. But we are done with the questions!
Earnings Week 1
Alright, let's go with some dry stats. I made an Excel (of course) to follow the evolution closely.
Here’s the screenshot:
I'm struggling with LinkedIn growth (I’m even losing followers!). It goes so slowly compared to the past. On Medium, I'm growing pretty fast, which I love. X is also a bit slower, and most followers are from a course I did in January.
All the money I earn is from writing on Medium, which makes me happy!
But I think it's obvious from the stats I'll have to diversify and put more effort into engagement for follower growth.
What I loved this week
🎧 Podcast The Diary of a CEO - episode with Daniel Priestley. Listened already twice.
📕 100M Offers - Alex Hormozi. I didn't expect it, but I absolutely loved this book. Full of actionable information on how to build a business ;)
📕 We Are All Stardust - Stefan Klein, conversations with world-leading scientists about diverse topics. Enjoyed this book.
The music of Novo Amor, so soothing.
Any tips on what I should read next?
And that's a wrap.
Phew!
Too much??
Let me know - your feedback is now the most important and valuable for me. (You can just reply on the email or comment with button below)
Thank you so much, and have an awesome weekend!
Aging Boomer, but I love a good Millennial story. Perhaps it will help me understand my kids. (Kidding.)
I'm interested in this journey, although I am no longer on it.
